The history
The early nineteenth century imagined a body assembled from the parts of others, and found that the assembly produced not a continuation but a new operator whose integrity was broken. The question has lived at that register since. What modification continues the operator, and what fragments it?
The mid-twentieth century produced augmentations nobody disputes. Pacemakers. Dialysis. Transplants. Cochlear implants. Prosthetic limbs. Each widened the corridor. The operator remained the operator.
The late twentieth century opened the neural layer. The early twenty-first has produced both working medical neural prosthetics and a movement arguing for extension past the body’s ceiling in directions nature would not have gone.
The test runs at every site. The verdicts vary.
